Equipment

  • 1 cocktail shaker
  • 1 muddler or wooden spoon
  • 1 julep cup or highball glass
  • Crushed ice
  • Garnish of choice (such as a sprig of mint or lemon peel)

Ingredients
  

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 1 tsp superfine sugar
  • 8-10 fresh mint leaves
  • Crushed ice
  • Club soda - optional

Instructions
 

  • In a cocktail shaker, gently muddle together the mint leaves and sugar.
  • Add the bourbon and fill the shaker with ice.
  • Shake until well chilled.
  • Fill a julep cup or highball glass with crushed ice.
  • Strain the cocktail over the ice.
  • If desired, top off with a splash of club soda.
  • Garnish with a sprig of mint or a lemon peel.
  • Enjoy your Mint Julep!

Notes

For a non-alcoholic version, substitute bourbon with ginger ale or lemon-lime soda.
You can also make a batch of Mint Juleps in a pitcher by multiplying the recipe and serving in a punch bowl with a large block of ice.
For a twist on the classic, try using different types of mint or adding a splash of fruit juice (such as peach or raspberry) for a fruity twist.
