Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Stirring spoon
  • Glass jar or bottle with lid
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Cheesecloth
  • Funnel

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup coffee beans - coarsely ground
  • 1 cup vodka
  • 1/2 cup dark rum
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, combine water and sugar over medium heat and stir until sugar is completely dissolved.
  • Add in the coarsely ground coffee beans and bring mixture to a boil. Let it boil for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove from heat and let the mixture cool completely.
  • Once cooled, strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth into a glass jar or bottle.
  • Add in the vodka, dark rum, and vanilla extract. Stir to combine.
  • Seal the jar or bottle with a lid and store in a cool, dark place for at least 2 weeks.
  • After 2 weeks, give the jar or bottle a shake and taste test the liqueur. If you prefer a stronger coffee flavor, let it sit for another week.
  • Once ready, strain the liqueur through a clean fine mesh strainer and discard any leftover coffee grounds.
  • Use a funnel to transfer the liqueur to a clean bottle. Store in the fridge for up to 3 months.

Notes

For a stronger coffee flavor, use more coffee beans and let the mixture sit for longer.
You can also experiment with different types of coffee beans for different flavor profiles.
If you prefer a sweeter liqueur, you can increase the amount of sugar to 1 1/2 cups.
To make a vegan version, substitute the honey with 1 cup of maple syrup or agave nectar.
