Candied Citrus Peels are a sweet and flavorful treat made with fresh citrus. These delightful morsels are easy to prepare, adding a zesty twist to your holiday goodies!
Wash the oranges thoroughly. Slice the peels into thin strips, making sure to remove as much of the white pith as possible.
Place the sliced peels in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Drain and repeat this process two more times to soften the peels.
In the same saucepan, combine 2 cups of sugar with 1 cup of water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Add the softened peels to the sugar syrup and cook on low heat for about 45 minutes, or until the peels are translucent.
Using a slotted spoon, transfer the candied peels to a cooling rack. Allow them to cool for 1 hour.
Once cooled, roll the peels in granulated sugar to coat. Store in an airtight container.
Notes
For best results, use organic citrus to avoid pesticides. You can use varieties like oranges, lemons, or grapefruits for unique flavors. Let them cool completely before storing them in an airtight container.Feel free to dip the candied peels in chocolate for an extra special treat!
