Serving and Pairing Suggestions

Serve Barbecued Chicken hot off the grill, garnished with fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro for a pop of color. This dish pairs wonderfully with classic sides such as Coleslaw, Corn on the Cob, or Baked Beans.

For a refreshing touch, add a side of Cucumber Raita to balance the smoky flavors.

Tips and Notes

  • Chicken: Use bone-in, skin-on chicken pieces like thighs, drumsticks, or breasts for the best flavor and moisture. You can also use a whole chicken cut into pieces.
  • Marinade: Marinate the chicken in your favorite barbecue sauce for at least 1 hour or overnight for maximum flavor. Consider adding spices like garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika for extra depth.
  • Grilling Method: Preheat your grill to medium heat. Grill the chicken for about 25-30 minutes, turning occasionally, until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C). Brush additional barbecue sauce on the chicken during the last few minutes of cooking for a caramelized finish.
  • Basting: To avoid flare-ups, move the chicken to a cooler part of the grill if flare-ups occur when basting with barbecue sauce.
  • Storage: Store any leftover barbecued chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or on the grill to restore moisture.

Enjoy the juicy and flavorful experience of Barbecued Chicken as a highlight of your next gathering!

Equipment

  • Grill
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Basting brush

Ingredients

  • 4 chicken breasts
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper - to taste

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, and salt and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  • Place the chicken breasts in a large ziplock bag and pour in the barbecue sauce. Marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.
  • Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
  • Take the chicken out of the marinade and discard the excess sauce. Place the chicken on the grill and cook for 10 minutes on each side, basting with the remaining marinade during the last few minutes of cooking.
  • Once the chicken is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F, remove from the grill and let it rest for 5 minutes.
  • Serve the barbecued chicken hot with your favorite side dishes.

Notes

For a smokier flavor, add a few drops of liquid smoke to the barbecue sauce.
If you don’t have a grill, you can also cook the chicken in the oven at 375°F for 20-25 minutes, basting with the sauce halfway through.
For a spicier kick, add more cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the barbecue sauce.
